About Us
I have loved words since I was a child. I was the kid who always won the spelling bees and scored the hundreds on English tests. (Math was quite another story!) I was a voracious reader, gobbling up book after book after book from the time I can remember.
As an adult I have held many jobs, but the love of words has never left me. Most of my jobs have centered around the written and spoken word. For the past thirteen years I have worked almost exclusively with words, transcribing, editing, proofing and helping people write more effectively. I have worked on many different small projects for people, such as medical and legal materials, articles, poems, web pages and advertisements. I had often thought of turning this into my life's work, but the time never seemed right; that is, until I was requested to edit my first book. It was a magical experience and I knew I was finally hooked.
A Word Aptly Written was born that day!
So why A Word Aptly Written? A Word Aptly Written is a slight tweaking of Proverbs 25:11 which states, "A Word Aptly Spoken Is Like Apples Of Gold In Settings Of Silver." This is so true; however, your written words count, as well. All our words, both spoken and written, should honor the Lord. To me,
A Word Aptly Written made sense for where I wanted this business to go. I hope you agree.
Testimonials
I love writing. It's what I was born to do. I
practically write in my sleep and sometimes my rough drafts show it!
When I am done with a writing project, one of my least favorite
things to do is to proof and edit. Let's face it, we authors cannot
proof our own work. I can't tell you how many times I have read
right past the same glaring goof-up without discovering it! The mind
is an amazing thing. It can fill in missing letters and transpose
typos. It even has sense enough to make sense of nonsense! I know
what I meant and my mind fills it right in whether it is there or
not! And you want to know a little secret? I hate proofreading! I
would rather be creating a new project than sitting down to figure
out how many " i's " there should be in "Mississippi"!
Carla is an Author's Blessing! She has the skill to catch a dangling
participle and a misplaced comma! She takes the pain out of
finishing a writing project. Best of all, she does it with love and
with respect for the author's style and intent. I never have to
worry about her changing the tone of my project! It's comforting to
know that my project is in good hands, the hands of someone who
won't compromise my work!
I used to find myself almost dreading the completion of a project,
but now it is an exciting time as I await the skillful eyes of the
Editor in Chief as she carefully polishes my words to shine as the
Lord had intended.
Carla is a treasure and a joy to work with too. Not only did I
receive prompt attention to my project, but the finished project
(error free!) with notes as to what she did along the way! She also
included suggestions for things she thought I might want to rewrite!
How simple is that to follow for a rewrite?
As I see it, my work is a reflection of me and what the Lord has put
in my heart to share. I can't put that work in the hands of just
anybody to edit. I choose Carla Ives and A Word Aptly Written
because I know the job will be done well and with care so that my
project remains my own.
Thanks, Carla! Without you, Say What You Mean: Defending the Faith
might not have made it to the Say What You Mean Convention!
